Completed in 1911, this lighthouse was a long needed guardian for sailors in these waters. Accidents were numerous and often horrific. In 1896, one incident alone killed 250 people. This photograph was taken from the helicopter of Jean Guichard in December of 1989 in the midst of a severe storm that had battered the lighthouse for days. The keepers of the lighthouse could do nothing but hold on and hope that this structure would hold. Intrigued by the noise of the helicopter, Theodore Malgorne dared to open the door only to close it just in the knick of time.
